Today I sold another licence to use this photo, this time to someone in Rome.
Why does this image of the world-famous Trevi Fountain in Rome keep selling? I wish I knew for sure, but here are some suggestions.
We can probably discount the fact that Hollywood made a film about this fountain – Three Coins in the Fountain. As it was made in 1954 there won’t be that many photo buyers who remember it.
Maybe it’s the keywords, some of which are: romantic, love, proposal and marry. See that couple in the background? I don’t know what they’re saying to one another but it looks pretty proposal-like to me. I believe that the eternal theme of love will make a sale more often than not.
Or maybe it’s the group co-ordinating their throwing of coins into the fountain. I didn’t hear them say uno, due, tre (or the same in whatever language they speak) before throwing, but I bet they did. What is all this throwing of coins about anyway? Well, so it’s said, if you throw one coin in the Trevi Fountain you will be sure to return to Rome, throw two coins and you will fall in love with a Roman, and throw three coins and you will marry that citizen of Rome.
So now you see it’s all fitting together.
I might have been lucky to snap this shot, but on the other hand I bet this happens every day.
