Just put this image up on Shutterstock.
It remains to be seen whether it will sell.
I think it will because:
- It’s a bit retro. Taken in 2007. I’ve found that my older photos sell well. After all, no-one can go out and take this photo tomorrow.
- It’s a photo of police officers. While it’s legal to photograph police officers in New York, you can see that the guy is aware of what I’m up to. I hurried off after snapping this. Sometimes you hesitate photographing police officers in case they take it badly. Result: images of police officers are rarer than say images of cuddly kittens. I once tried to photograph police officers in Rome who were having a cigarette break. They made it clear I’d better not press the shutter. Last time I was in New York I thought about photographing a guy in a coffee shop who was wearing a Secret Service bullet-proof vest under his plain clothes windcheater, but decided not to risk a bad outcome.
- There’s a certain irony in police officers guarding bodies which aren’t part of a crime scene. So I think this image will make people laugh and/or ponder. Either way, it’s a great way to grab attention, which has to be step one before making a sale.
Apparently all of the subjects of this exhibition donated their bodies to be used in this way after their death. Not sure if the exhibition is still touring, but catch it if you can because it’s (a) amazing, (b) beautiful, and (c) highly educational.
UPDATE May 2021: Well, this image didn’t sell. Perhaps because of the blown highlights (or maybe it’s not as interesting as I think). I’ve now moved it from Shutterstock to my store at Picfair.
